Frequently asked dental questions

Are Dental X-Rays Safe? Why do I need them?

Dental X-rays play a vital role in your dentist being able to monitor your oral health and diagnose and treat potential problems. Dental x-rays allow your dentist to be able to see and evaluate your teeth, soft tissues of the mouth, facial/jawbones, and help them determine your overall oral health.

Safety is our upmost priority. Here at Distinctive Dentistry, we use the latest digital x-ray technology. Digital x-rays use 80-90 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays. When utilized at the intervals that our dentists prescribe, digital x-rays are very safe and extremely effective at diagnosing problems and keeping your teeth, gums, and supporting structures healthy. What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that replace a tooth root. These titanium posts are surgically placed into the bone of the jaw. After they are placed, a process called osseointegration begins. During this process, the titanium implant fuses into the bone where it was placed. Osseointegration is a vital part of the long-term success of implants.

Implants can replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. They can even replace all teeth in an arch or act as connectors to hold and stabilize dentures. Once the titanium post is fused to the bone, a top portion, or crown, is added to the implant that closely resembles your natural tooth.

Dental implants can be an excellent solution for patients who have missing or compromised teeth due to trauma, deep cracks or fractures, severe decay, and periodontal disease, amongst many other situations. If you’d like to learn more about dental implants, click here:

What is tooth sensitivity and how can I get rid of it?

It is very common for patients to develop sensitive teeth. Patients may notice sensitivity when they consume foods that are cold, hot, sweet, or acidic. Patients can even feel sensitivity when brushing or touching along the roots of their teeth. This sensitivity can be a result of several factors including:

  • Receding gums
  • Tooth decay
  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Recent tooth whitening
  • Orthodontics
  • Fillings
  • Grinding or clenching

Some things you can do to help alleviate dental sensitivity are:

  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste such as Sensodyne. Many of these toothpastes contain potassium nitrate, which helps block the small pores in tooth enamel that can lead to sensitivity.
  • Use a fluoridated rinse or toothpaste.
  • Get a nightguard if you suspect you may be clenching or grinding your teeth at night
  • Visit your dentist to rule out potential problems. We also have professional treatments that we can apply that can dramatically help with tooth sensitivity.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity or just want to talk about your oral healthcare in general, our caring team is here to serve you.
