Has your tooth been damaged in an accident? Do you have a filling that is failing, leaving the tooth underneath in pain? Dental crowns have proven to be incredibly effective at restoring teeth for a healthier, functional smile. At Distinctive Dentistry, we have long used crowns to restore and cosmetically improve smiles in Eugene, Oregon, and the surrounding areas.
Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are placed on the entire tooth to improve its resilience and appearance. While crowns are ideal for treating teeth with large cavities, they can also rebuild your tooth after significant damage. Furthermore, Drs. Ty Jaros, Jacob Gubrud and Robert Gemmell can use a dental crown to cover a permanently stained tooth. Even if your tooth discoloration is intrinsic (internal) or has incurred other damage caused by injury, a dental crown can cover it to improve its appearance and stability.
That’s not it. Dental crowns can also be used to:
In the case of a forming fracture or crack on a tooth, the sooner you seek treatment, the better the outcome usually is. If you neglect crown treatment, your crack or fracture can worsen over time, and tooth loss or the need for additional treatment is possible.
Getting a dental crown generally needs at least two visits. During the first appointment, we evaluate your damaged tooth using X-rays to check the health of the root and bone. Next, we numb the area and properly shape the tooth to receive the crown. If a significant part of your tooth is damaged, we rebuild your tooth so that your crown can stay put.
Once your tooth is reshaped, we will take an impression to fabricate the crown. Next, we send the impression to a dental lab where the crown is sculpted and sent back to us. As you wait for your permanent crown, we will place a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth.
The second visit begins with the dentist removing your temporary crown. We will then inspect your new crown to ensure the color and fit is ideal. If everything is ideal, we will permanently bond your crown in place. And just like that, you have a new, healthy, and beautiful smile that you can proudly show to the world.
Dental crowns are durable enough to withstand the daily stresses of biting and chewing. With proper care, dental crowns should last for many years. The other benefits of dental crowns include:
